Hudson Card gets first-team reps over Ewers in first spring practice
The first day of spring camp has officially arrived for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program on the morning of March 22. Texas began their first spring practice early in the morning of March 22, a little more than one month out from the spring football game, set to take place on April 23 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Sark and the Longhorns got underway on March 22 with all eyes falling on how the reps would be dished out on the offensive side of the ball. A looming quarterback competition between rising junior Hudson Card and the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers commands the headlines for the Longhorns in spring camp.
Although, most Longhorns fans still feel that Ewers is the heavy favorite to win the starting job by the fall. And that is warranted given the fact that it feels like something would have to go seriously wrong for Ewers not to be named the Week 1 starting quarterback.
Moreover, it was still interesting to see how the first-team reps at quarterback were dished out in the first spring practice this week. According to multiple reports (including from Inside Texas and Horns247), Card got the first-team reps with the offense in the first spring practice on March 22, then followed by Ewers.
Texas football reportedly gives first-team QB reps in first spring practice to Hudson Card over Quinn Ewers
It was anticipated that Card and Ewers would split the first-team reps in spring ball. Sark made his intentions clear in that regard entering camp.
Thus, this is not very surprising that Sark gave Card the first-team reps ahead of Ewers in the first spring practice on March 22.
To affirm this point, it looks like first-team reps were mostly given in favor of returning players over new additions to the team. For example, former Alabama junior tight end Jahleel Billingsley got fourth-team reps in the first spring practice despite being one of the favorites to start at the position this fall for the Longhorns.
None of this is really out of the ordinary it seems for an early spring practice in the midst of an offseason with a good amount of roster attrition.
Yet, it will be interesting to see if Ewers is able to really make a solid impression early on in spring ball and win more reps over the likes of Card and the rest of the Texas quarterback room.
We will obviously continue to monitor the developing situation in Texas’ quarterback room this spring. The early indications, though, seem to be that both Card and Ewers are performing well in practice and workouts which is a good sign.
