The least likely player on this list that I would anticipate would be returning for the Longhorns next season, but possibly still could, is the former Minnesota Golden Gophers and Pitt Panthers senior guard Marcus Carr. The one-time All-Big Ten and one-time All-Big 12 guard would be a valuable player for the Longhorns to see return for next season, though.

There are two reasons why I’m leaning toward saying Carr won’t return for the Longhorns next season. The first is the fact that he tested the waters in the 2021 NBA Draft class before returning to the college ranks and entering the transfer portal last year. It would make sense that he tries his hand at taking his talents to the next level again this year.

And the second reason why I don’t believe Carr is leaning toward returning to the Forty Acres is the fact that he doesn’t have much more that he can likely prove playing one more year in college in terms of what NBA scouts could see in his skill set.

While many Longhorns fans were frustrated by some of the inconsistencies that Carr brought to the table in the season that was, his return would be welcome news for this team. His two-way skill set and bucket-getting ability on offense was something that came in handy for the Longhorns more often than not this season.

Carr is a more than capable on-ball defender. And he was one of the most proven and capable iso scorers in this backcourt unit this season.

Losing that would be a detriment for the Longhorns’ backcourt unit, depending on who Beard and his staff could find to replace Carr this offseason.

In all likelihood, Texas will try to run with the 2022 five-star point guard signee Arterio Morris or another transfer portal addition starting at the one heading into next season. That is if Texas is going to have to replace Carr.

Carr could still help Texas reach the next level next season. The way he played in the two NCAA Tournament games this year inspires confidence that he has some momentum heading into the 2022-23 campaign.

Those are some of the positive aspects about the possibility of Carr returning next season.
