The first commit that has stuck around in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff is the touted four-star Arlington-Seguin defensive back Jamel Johnson. Texas has held a commitment from Johnson in their 2023 class since early November 2021.

But there were some indications showing up during the winter months that Johnson could be keeping his options open, and even potentially re-opening his recruitment. Johnson looks to be planning to take all five of his official visits in 2022, which could potentially be scary news for Texas, especially given some of the other big-time programs that have offered him thus far.

There is reason to believe that the Longhorns can hang onto the commitment of Johnson for the long haul, though. Johnson looks to be recruiting others to the Longhorns 2023 class in the midst of spring ball. And he’s still slated to visit Texas in early April.

Texas football gets reaffirmation of the commitment from 4-Star DB Jamel Johnson

Those are some indicators in the midst of the spring visit season that Johnson can still remain firmly committed to the Longhorns 2023 class.

A report from Horns247 on March 23 (paid content) indicates this sort of reaffirmation that Johnson is holding strong on his commitment to Texas. In fact, Johnson mentioned in this Horns247 piece that he remains “100 percent committed” to the Longhorns.

Although, it looks like Johnson still has his sights set on four specific schools already for those he will visit officially in 2022. He reportedly still wants to visit the LSU Tigers, Arizona State Sun Devils, Ole Miss Rebels, and Arkansas Razorbacks.

Johnson is an important piece for the Longhorns to keep around in their 2023 class. And Texas is obviously prioritizing keeping the relationship strong with him as they have recruiting ace/special teams coordinator Jeff Banks and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph as his top recruiters from this staff.

Texas currently holds commitments from two prospects in their 2023 class, including from Johnson. The other commit in the Longhorns 2023 class is the talented four-star C.E. King defensive lineman Dylan Spencer.
