Skip Holtz, former Louisiana Tech head coach

While it might be tough to pull off the hire of the former Louisiana Tech Bulldogs head coach Skip Holtz for Sark and the Longhorns staff at this point of the offseason, this would definitely be a candidate to keep in mind to join the analyst staff. That is largely due to the fact that Holtz took a head coaching job with the Birmingham Stallions in the inaugural season of the USFL.

But the inaugural seasons of these alternative professional football leagues to the NFL haven’t workout out very well in the last few years (i.e. the Alliance of American Football and the XFL). In fact, most are becoming defunct after less than one full year of operations.

That is why it is worth keeping the idea of reaching out to Holtz to join the Longhorns analyst staff top of mind as this offseason moves along. Maybe Holtz does become available at some point during the offseason to join a staff like Texas’.

Moreover, the value that Holtz could bring to the table stems from his proven track record of consistent head coaching experience in the FBS. He’s pretty much remained a consistent winner at each of his head coaching stops at the collegiate. That stems all the way back to his run as the head coach of the East Carolina Pirates in the mid-to-late 2000s.

Holtz also put up winning records in six of his nine seasons as the Louisiana Tech head coach. That included four seasons with at least nine wins.

There is also experience that Holtz has as an offensive coordinator/offensive positional coach dating all the way back to the 1980s. He’s held roles as the Notre Dame offensive coordinator, Colorado State wide receivers coach, and South Carolina offensive coordinator throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The proven track record of Holtz in terms of player development and consistent winning, along with experience as an offensive coordinator, could be valuable for the Longhorns analyst staff this year.
