Former Texas WR Bru McCoy looks bound to transfer to Tennessee
Among the more prominent former Texas football players to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal for at least the second time in their career this offseason is the former elite five-star recruit and sophomore wide receiver Bru McCoy. Following a few tough years with the USC Trojans, McCoy put his name in the transfer portal yet again as he’s looking to find his third home in his collegiate career to date.
McCoy does look to have a potential favored landing spot out of the transfer portal already this offseason. There are a few reasons to believe that the Tennessee Volunteers will be the next landing spot for McCoy out of the transfer portal.
First and foremost, McCoy is set to have a multi-day visit through this coming weekend with head coach Josh Heupel and the Vols. That is a long visit to take considering the fact that there is already traction between McCoy and the Vols.
Another convincing piece of evidence that McCoy could already be planning to become a Vol this year is the fact that he is listed in the university’s student directory, at least as of the morning of March 25. That is something that is hard to ignore when piecing the puzzle together of the next potential landing spot for McCoy out of the portal.

Moreover, there really aren’t any other programs that have any sort of material traction with McCoy that we’ve seen since he first entered the transfer portal back in January. Tennessee seems to be it from what we know of.
If Tennessee does wind up officially landing a commitment from McCoy out of the portal, Heupel and the Vols would definitely be getting a very talented wideout in the mix. The question with McCoy always surrounds how much he will actually be available for them in game action this coming season.
Since officially signing and enrolling at USC back in 2019, McCoy has only played in roughly a half-dozen games. That is over the span of three seasons. He missed the entirety of the 2019 and 2021 seasons due to various reasons.
In the one season he did play in so far during his collegiate career (which came in 2020), McCoy registered 21 catches for 236 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
The only time when McCoy was part of the Longhorns roster was during the spring semester in 2019. He got a release from his LOI following the Early Signing Period in December 2018 with the Trojans to officially sign and enroll early at Texas during the 2019 offseason. He would then revert back to signing and enrolling at USC later that same offseason. Now, it looks like he could find his next home out of the portal with the Vols in the SEC East.
