Now firmly in the midst of spring camp, second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program are seeing some of the bigger storylines surrounding this team develop day-by-day. That includes the looming quarterback competition for Texas in spring ball between the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers and rising junior Hudson Card.

Card and Ewers are duking it out to see who can become the favorite coming out of spring camp to win the starting quarterback job this fall. While it doesn’t look like Sark and the Longhorns staff are prepared to announce the starting quarterback at any point during spring ball, the way each signal-caller handles this process in the days and weeks ahead could still be crucial.

Most Longhorns fans will tell you that Ewers should be the clear-cut favorite to win the starting job this fall. And there is some truth to that.

But Sark tends to have more success with his complex offensive schemes and concepts under a more experienced starting quarterback leading the way. That would favor Card over Ewers at the outset of the 2022 season.

Texas football QB Hudson Card reportedly has a bruise on his throwing hand in spring practice

Nonetheless, there is some news worth noting for the Longhorns after the first couple of spring practices this week. According to a report from Inside Texas (paid content) on March 25, Card is dealing with a bruise on his throwing hand in practice this week.

This looks to be a reason why Card might have some passes that get away from him in spring drills from this week and likely heading into next week.

But this sounds like something that shouldn’t be bothering Card all that much once the spring game arrives on April 23.

Moreover, it will be interesting to see how both Card and Ewers perform when the Longhorns get full pads practices and scrimmages underway in the next week or so. Full-pads practices are set to come in the next couple of days. And the first spring scrimmage is now less than a couple of weeks away.
