Texas coaches satisfied with Quinn Ewers early in spring ball
The first week of spring ball for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program brought about more discussion regarding the looming quarterback battle for this offseason. Texas’ quarterback competition is taking place this spring with both the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers and rising junior Hudson Card splitting the first-team reps in practice.
And it sounds like Card and Ewers are both making a good impression on the coaching staff in various ways early on in spring camp. For Card, his newfound confidence and vocal tendencies seem to be a positive indication for Sark and his staff.
Yet, Ewers seems to be impressing the coaches and players with the obvious raw arm talent that he brings to the table. But this is the main calling card for Ewers as he is one of the most highly-regarded quarterback recruits of the last two decades.

Moreover, this should be the ideal scenario for Ewers to show off the raw skills he brings to the table. Getting to showcase his raw arm talent in practice without full pads gives him a shot to build his confidence and get his rhythm going with the rest of this offense before full-contact drills and scrimmages later this spring.
And according to a report from Orangebloods this weekend (paid content), Ewers is making a positive impression on the coaching staff with what he showed in the first week of spring practice. That is a good sign given the fact that it sounded like he struggled to get adjusted in fall camp last year with head coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes.
Now, the fact that Ewers is making a positive impression on the coaching staff already is something that should be taken with a grain of salt. It seems like the coaching staff is excited about the potential he brings to the table and he is apparently transitioning well in this quarterback room early this offseason.
But we’re not getting the idea at this point that Ewers is running away with the quarterback competition in spring ball. It’s going to take time for this quarterback competition to play out if just to figure out how ready Ewers is to take the starting reigns right away in Week 1 this year.
It won’t really benefit Sark and his staff to name a starting quarterback before fall camp arrives. He likely wants to keep Ewers and Card competing at a high level to prove they can handle taking the reigns of this increasingly potent offense in 2022.
Ewers needs to prove that he can handle the spotlight this fall. And that won’t be easy given the fact that he’s only taken a couple of actual game snaps in his collegiate career to date. Getting thrown to the fire in an offensive scheme under Sark that is pretty complex is a tough task for a young and developing quarterback such as Ewers.
But he still has some time in camp this offseason to get adjusted and develop some real chemistry with his supporting cast on offense. Texas has a long time before they need to name a starting quarterback. And knowing that Ewers is already making some positive moves in spring ball is a good sign of things to come for him.
Texas began the first practice of spring earlier this week, specifically on March 22. And the spring practices continue this weekend on March 26. And then, the spring football game is set to take place on April 23 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
