Since the elite five-star El Campo running back and former Texas commit Rueben Owens wasn’t able to make his originally scheduled visit with the Longhorns this weekend, there was another top-tier recruit at the position that had the staff’s priority in the last couple of days. And that priority went to the highly touted four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr.

In the first visit for Baxter to Texas in 2022, new running backs coach Tashard Choice tried to continue building on the spark of momentum that this staff found after he was hired to replace the departed running backs coach Stan Drayton. Choice seemingly had a good connection with Baxter when he was the running backs coach with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Texas hiring Choice a few months ago allowed Texas to rise up the list for Baxter after the turn of the calendar year.

It sounds like it was a full force effort from the Texas coaches and players to help make the right impression on Baxter and his camp. Texas reportedly had Choice and star rising junior running back Bijan Robinson spending a lot of time with him this weekend.

Baxter mentioned at the conclusion of his visit to Austin this weekend that this experience was “great” and that Texas has some “awesome people”.

It is also worth noting that Baxter mentioned that he thinks Choice is a “great running backs coach and person in general”.

Moreover, what was critical about Texas making the right impression on Baxter this weekend was the fact that he also visited with the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies in the last couple of days.

While Texas is still hanging around in the thick of the top schools in the recruitment of Baxter, so are the Aggies. It was good for Texas to have a successful visit with Baxter to try and make some big moves here.
