A tough weekend for No. 2 ranked Texas baseball and head coach David Pierce continues in the midst of the first series of the Big 12 slate against the No. 16 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas couldn’t catch many breaks as the pitching staff continued some of their recent struggles in the first two games of this three-game weekend series on the road in Lubbock against the Red Raiders.

On March 26, Pierce and the Longhorns took the second straight game in this weekend series taken to extras. And it was another loss for the Longhorns that was really hard to stomach for the Longhorns faithful in extras.

Texas’ loss in extras on March 25 saw Texas Tech score the game-winning run as they stole home. That’s a really tough way to lose in the Big 12 opener.

And then, the Longhorns had a chance to even up the series on March 26 as they had a 12-11 lead at one point in the 11th inning. But a devastating bottom half of the inning saw the Longhorns let up five earned runs en route to Texas Tech taking home their second straight win in this series over Texas by the final score of 16-12.

This leaves Texas with the goal of coming up with some shred of momentum from this Big 12 opener series on the road this weekend on the afternoon of March 27. Texas is looking to snap their two-game losing streak this weekend as sophomore left-hander Lucas Gordon gets the start on the mound in the series finale.

The last start for Gordon saw him pitch seven shutout innings in a win over the Incarnate Word Cardinals as part of a three-game series sweep last weekend. Gordon at least has some confidence coming into this one as a good portion of the rest of the pitching staff struggled over the course of the last couple of weeks.

Texas will also need the bats to come alive to give this pitching staff some support in this weekend series finale against Texas Tech. Expect Gordon to try and inject some energy into this pitching staff to round out the weekend. But the struggles of the bullpen will need to get picked up by a solid effort from Gordon as the starter and the bats as they did in the loss on March 26.

The first pitch between Texas and Texas Tech in this three-game weekend series finale is set for 2 p.m. CT on March 27 at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock. Texas carries a record of 18-7 (0-2 Big 12) into this series finale against Texas Tech as they look to snap their two-game losing skid and avoid the sweep.
