To avoid the sweep in the opening series of the Big 12 slate for head coach David Pierce and No. 2 ranked Texas baseball, this team was able to dominate the No. 16 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road on the afternoon of March 27. This looked like the Texas team we know and love on the diamond on March 27.

Pierce and the Longhorns saw sophomore left-hander Lucas Gordon give this team six solid innings on the mound with just one earned run. Gordon also gave up just five hits, two walks, and had seven strikeouts on the afternoon.

This outing saw Gordon continue his dominant run on the mound after he held the Incarnate Word Cardinals scoreless in a win last weekend. Following this win over the Red Raiders, Gordon now sits with a record of 2-1 with an ERA near 1.50.

Moreover, Texas didn’t even need this solid outing on the mound from Gordon as much as many would think otherwise. The Texas bats came alive again on March 27 after an explosive outing in a tough loss in extra innings on March 26.

Lucas Gordon and Mitchell Daly lead Texas baseball to dominant 11-run win over Texas Tech on March 27

Led by sophomore second baseman Mitchell Daly, the Longhorns got a whopping 17 hits on the day, a dozen runs, and posted no errors. Texas also reached base on a walk on two occasions. Daly led the way for the Longhorns with two hits, two runs, one home run, and three runs batted in on the game.

This was yet another solid outing for Texas where they registered a double-digit number of hits on the day. The difference in this game, though, was the fact that Texas was able to convert on the chances they did get. Texas only left five runners on base in this game, which was a shift in narrative from the rest of the weekend.

Texas also saw the likes of Trey Faltine, Skyler Messinger, Murphy Stehly, and Silas Ardoin, all at least come up with multiple hits or multiple runs batted in on the afternoon.

Moreover, the dozen runs that the Texas offense posted on the day while Gordon was solid on the mound were good enough to run-rule the Red Raiders.

This made for a pretty crazy outcome after the Longhorns struggled to close out against the Red Raiders as they lost in extra innings in the first two games of this three-game weekend series in Lubbock.

The 11-run win over Texas Tech on March 27 snaps the Longhorns’ two-game losing streak and moves their record on the season to 19-7 (1-2 Big 12). Next up for the Longhorns is the highly-anticipated one-game midweek series with the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies at home at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin on March 29.
