Coming out of a huge visit weekend for the 2023 and 2024 Texas football recruiting classes, second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff have to feel good about where they sit with things on the trail. But Texas needs to continue to work on the recruiting trail to conjure up some level of momentum throughout the rest of the spring.

There is one particular target of the Longhorns 2023 class that is worth talking about coming out of this critical first big visit weekend of spring ball. And that one particular target of the Longhorns 2023 class worth talking about on the night of March 28 is the rising three-star North Crowley linebacker S’Maje Burrell.

Texas looked to have a really important visit on tap with Burrell over the weekend. With the way that some competing schools on the recruiting trail for Burrell of late, Texas really needed to make some big moves with the in-state linebacker during his visit to Austin.

Texas football now trending to land 3-Star LB target S’Maje Burrell post-weekend visit

By all accounts, the Texas coaching staff pretty much made all the right moves in their pitch to Burrell. The Fort Worth, TX, native was active on social media coming out of the weekend and it’s starting to look like his commitment is even trending to land with Texas.

The two most recent expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions both project Burrell’s commitment to land with Texas. Both those expert Crystal Ball Predictions were placed for Burrell on the evening of March 28.

Even the On3 recruiting prediction machine has slightly moved in favor of Texas since the winter months. Texas and the Baylor Bears are now given equal chances to land the commitment of Burrell in the On3 RPM at this point of the offseason.

But it looks like the Longhorns definitely hold the momentum over the Bears in the race to land a commitment from Burrell coming out of his visit to Austin last weekend.

It sounds like Baylor still has a good shot here with Burrell as do the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Ohio State Buckeyes. With Texas Tech and Ohio State set to host Burrell on visits later this spring, you definitely can’t count those schools out in the Burrell sweepstakes in the slightest.

For the time being, though, you have to feel good about the position of the Longhorns in the race to land a commitment from Burrell. He’s a great fit with this defense under co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate. And it looks like he’s really buying into the pitch and scheming ideas they have for him at this point of his recruitment.
