Texas Basketball: 3 early star transfer portal targets this offseason
Terrence Shannon, SG
A more familiar face to the Longhorns faithful, and Beard in particular, is the former blue-chip recruit and junior shooting guard/wing Terrence Shannon. The former Texas Tech star scoring guard/wing is one of the more surprising entrants in the transfer portal this month. Shannon is definitely one of the most recognizable names in the portal at this moment.
It wasn’t long ago at all that Shannon and the Red Raiders were competing with the two-seed Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet 16 before getting eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
We shouldn’t overlook a lot of the strides that Shannon made in terms of overall offensive efficiency in the season that was for the Red Raiders. He registered a career-best 58.1 true shooting percentage, 3.2 offensive box plus/minus, 15.7 assist percentage, and 38.4 three-point shooting percentage, during the 2021-22 campaign.
What adding Shannon out of the transfer portal could really help address for the Longhorns this offseason is some of the scoring needs. Texas went through some very lengthy scoring droughts this offseason in some games. That even stretched through the latter stages of the Round of 32 loss to the Boilermakers. Shannon is a spark plug scorer that could help the Longhorns add some potency on offense.
I personally believe Shannon would be a very flashy, but valuable, addition for the Longhorns this offseason if Beard and his staff could make that move.
If Texas is set to lose any of the likes of senior guards Courtney Ramey and Marcus Carr, redshirt senior shooting guard/wing Andrew Jones, and/or senior forward Timmy Allen, this team will need a proven scoring spark. Shannon could provide that for the Longhorns right away.
