There was about a six-week period at the outset of the offseason where second-year head coach and his staff were busy at work in the NCAA Transfer Portal filling various needs for the Texas football program. Yet, Texas has slowed its activity in the transfer portal of late with most of the coaching staff’s attention turning to the recruiting trail for high school prospects and to the start of spring camp with the first practice taking place on March 22.

Now, though, it appears Sark and the Longhorns staff are back at work recruiting out of the transfer portal this offseason. In the midst of spring ball, it looks like the Longhorns have another transfer portal target in mind that could soon be visiting Austin.

According to a report from Horns247 on March 29 (paid content), Texas got in contact with the former LSU Tigers redshirt freshman linebacker and former four-star recruit Josh White. Texas moved pretty fast on getting in contact with White after he put his name in the transfer portal earlier this week, specifically on March 28.

It also sounds like Texas could be getting White on campus for a visit as soon as next weekend.

White also posted on his Twitter timeline on the evening of March 29 that he officially received a scholarship offer from Texas after “a great talk” with Sark. It’s notable since this is one of a rare number of offers that the Longhorns staff sent out to a transfer portal target in the last few weeks.

It also looks like other schools such as the Baylor Bears, TCU Horned Frogs, Miami Hurricanes, and Nebraska Huskers, among a few others, are also in on the race to land a commitment from White out of the portal.

Moreover, there seems to be a good level of familiarity between White and the Texas coaching staff. Texas likely made it a priority to get in contact with White very soon after his name showed up in the portal.

And second-year Texas special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks was the primary recruiter pursuing White during the 2020 recruiting cycle for the Alabama Crimson Tide when he was coming out of Cy Creek High School.

White didn’t get much playing time at LSU in the last couple of seasons, though, due to various factors. He only played in a few games, registering roughly a half-dozen tackles in the process. But White was a Longhorns’ target coming out of high school and a number of former Alabama assistants now on the Forty Acres were interested in him for their 2020 recruiting class.

This is an emerging storyline we will be following as this is something that might be able to help Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns fill some much-needed linebacker depth this offseason.
