Texas Football: 10 greatest head coaches all-time for the Longhorns
2. Mack Brown, 1998-2013
The most recent Texas head coach on this list is also one that remains active in the FBS ranks.
Current North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown deserves one of the top spots on this list among the best in Texas program history. Not only did Mack win the most recent National Championship for the Longhorns, but he also won two outright Big 12 Championships and two National Coach of the Year awards.
Mack is also one of the longest-tenured head coaches in program history, spending 16 years with Texas while registering a record of 158-48 (.767 winning percentage). Texas is still trying to find that same level of success they found under Mack in the 2000s under the direction of Sarkisian this year.
1. Darrell K. Royal, 1957-1976
Who else would top this list but the great Darrell K. Royal?
The man that has his name gracing the football stadium was an extremely accomplished head coach during his two-decade-long run as Texas’ head coach. Texas won three National titles under Royal and finished in the top five in the major polls in roughly another half-dozen seasons.
Texas also came one shy of winning a whopping dozen SWC titles under Royal.
The rest of his run at Texas was highlighted by a 167-47-5 record (.774 winning percentage) and an impressive 13 consensus All Americans.
Not only should Royal be considered the best in Texas program history, but also one of the greats in all of college football history. It goes without saying, though, that Royal was the best head coach in program history.
