2 Texas dormant rivalries named among most anticipated in CFB
There are multiple historic rivalries with a lot of tradition throughout the history of the Texas football program that are currently dormant. The tradition of success and fierce rivalries throughout the history of the Texas program have created some amnesty at rival schools that still lasts to this day.
And some of those rivalries are still kept alive to this day with the Longhorns. Texas still faces the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game on an annual basis. Texas also gets to take on some of the smaller in-state rivals such as the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Baylor Bears, TCU Horned Frogs, etc., on an annual basis in football.
Even the historic rivalry against the Arkansas Razorbacks was revived last season when the Longhorns came up short in Fayetteville.
It also looks like the Arkansas rivalry could be revived on an annual basis in the very near future. With Texas and Oklahoma bound to leave the Big 12 for the SEC likely by 2025, we could soon see Texas facing some of their bigger SEC foes on a regular basis once again.
Dormant Texas football rivalries we’d like to see played again soon
But there are some other former Big 12 foes that the Longhorns don’t have on the schedule for the foreseeable future that college football fans around the country would like to see take place again.
A piece from 247Sports this week named two dormant Texas rivalries among those that are the most anticipated for some type of revival in the near future. This 247Sports piece mentioned Texas’ rivalries with the Texas A&M Aggies and Nebraska Cornhuskers among the 10 most anticipated to be revived in the near future.
Yet, this piece also notes the rivalries between Texas and the likes of Texas A&M and Nebraska as non-conference matchups we’d like to see happen soon. But the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry could come back before too long if they end up in the same division in the SEC by the mid-2020s.
The last time that Texas faced Texas A&M was back in 2011, which resulted in a close win in College Station. And the last time Texas faced Nebraska was back in 2010. Texas also still sits on a six-game winning streak against Nebraska.
