Texas baseball looks to make it two straight vs. OU
On the afternoon of April 2, No. 8 ranked Texas baseball and head coach David Pierce will be looking to take the weekend series over the rival Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game on the diamond. Texas knocked off Oklahoma in the series opener on the night of April 1 to prevent their losing streak from moving to two games.
Pierce and the Longhorns got the win over the Sooners in convincing fashion on April 1 over the Sooners by the final score of 7-1. In a well-rounded effort behind stud pitcher Pete Hansen on the mound, the Longhorns controlled this series opener through and through against Oklahoma.
Hansen was great on the mound for the Longhorns on April 1, giving this team eight innings of work with just one earned run. That left some easy cleanup for Coy Cobb in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Texas also saw the bats stay alive in this game, led by a perfect effort at the plate from Skyler Messinger. Going 4-for-4 at the plate in this April 1 win over Oklahoma, Messinger was a spark for this offense. Texas had 13 hits and one error in that win over the Sooners too.
Tristan Stevens gets the mound for Texas baseball vs. OU on April 2
Moreover, the Longhorns are set to have another reliable starter on the mound on April 2. Redshirt senior right-hander Tristan Stevens will be looking to keep the Longhorns’ dominant effort on the mound alive in this second game of the weekend series against the Sooners.
The last start for Stevens resulted in a loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders last weekend. That was easily the worst start of the season so far for Stevens as he gave up seven earned runs in just five innings on the mound.
If Texas can at least keep Oklahoma in check by giving up no more than four or five earned runs. Texas’ offense has done more than enough lately to keep up the success in the win column of late. The issue mostly stems from the bullpen collapsing in games in the last couple of weeks.
Texas comes into this second of three meetings with the Sooners at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX, in this weekend series sporting a record of 20-8 (2-2 Big 12). The first pitch time between Texas and Oklahoma on April 2 is set for 12 p.m. CT.
