All eyes still remain on the ongoing quarterback competition this spring for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program. Now roughly three weeks away from the spring football game, Texas is at least getting a little bit of a clearer picture as to who is making the better impression on the coaches in practice between the rising junior quarterback Hudson Card and former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers.

Most Longhorns fans likely still anticipate that Ewers will be the Week 1 starter at the quarterback position this fall. But that would be discounting the fact that Card does look to be making some progress in spring drills thus far.

And it’s hard to ignore some of the inconsistencies we’re hearing about Ewers coming out of spring ball in the last couple of weeks. It is worth noting that we have to be patient with the transition for Ewers into this program. But the expectations are going to be high for him out of the gates with the Longhorns no matter what.

Moreover, it does sound like we’re starting to see some level of separation in this ongoing quarterback competition in terms of the results we’ve received from Ewers and Card. According to a report from Inside Texas this weekend (part of the On3 Network, paid content), neither of the two Longhorns quarterbacks have done much in spring ball to really impress the coaches.

But IT does mention that Card is performing “better” than Ewers more often than not so far this spring.

That is an important aspect to note, especially if Sark keeps the quarterback competition open throughout fall camp. It’s abundantly clear at this point of the offseason that Sark and the Longhorns staff will make Ewers work to win the starting job.

He’s not going to come in and just take the starting job from Card right away without any sort of competition.

And signs we’re seeing from both Card and Ewers a couple of weeks deep into spring camp show that the rising junior will not be letting up anytime soon. This could be essentially the last stand for Card in terms of trying to cement his spot in this quarterback room moving forward.

There are still a few more weeks of spring practices left for Card to continue to make the right impression on the coaches and for Ewers to get on track in camp. Hearing something like this essentially saying that Card is outperforming Ewers more often than not over the course of just a couple of weeks is obviously no reason for Texas fans to panic.
