The most high-profile position change in spring camp so far for the Longhorns saw returning senior defensive back Anthony Cook move from playing at nickel to more of a pure safety. And while the move for Cook from nickel to safety isn’t one that came in the midst of spring camp, it’s one I haven’t touched on enough yet. He’s making progressions that need to be talked about in the last few weeks.

With Cook moving from nickelback to safety this offseason, that should open the door for the former blue-chip recruit and junior defensive back Jahdae Barron to take over as the starter at nickel. Barron seems to be making waves in spring ball thus far. And he started to show the flashes of what Texas needs at nickel.

If Texas can get a duo of Cook and Barron in the defensive backfield playing anywhere near their peak levels, respectively, this secondary is set to make some big strides this coming season. And from what we’re hearing out of spring camp thus far, Cook is making the necessary strides to be an impact safety in Pete Kwiatkowski’s defensive scheme this fall.

Cook is going to be one of the most important leaders of this defense this coming season. He’s the most productive and consistent returning defensive back this offseason.

And if he can effectively pull off this position change this offseason, then the impact he’ll have on this secondary will be untold during the upcoming season.
