One of the most highly-anticipated debuts for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program in spring ball this offseason is the former four-star recruit and incoming freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy. As the lone high school quarterback signee in the 2022 recruiting class, Murphy arrived on the Forty Acres with a lot of attention on him.

Yet, Longhorns fans were left waiting a little while after the start of spring practice last month to see Murphy make his debut at least in camp. Murphy injured his foot and was in a walking boot throughout much of the latter phases of winter workouts and the first couple of weeks of spring practice.

Although, it now looks like Murphy is getting up and running in spring practice this week. According to a report from Horns247 on April 5 (paid content), Murphy was dressed and participating in throwing reps in spring practice early this week.

It sounds like Murphy still wasn’t able to participate in the full-speed 11-on-11 practice reps. But he was able to participate in most other throwing drills and walkthroughs for the first time this offseason in spring camp.

This is good news for the Longhorns as they look to make some much-needed strides in the quarterback room this offseason. While we don’t expect Murphy to compete for the starting job right away, he could very well be the backup by the end of the 2022 season. His inclusion in drills and any progression in camp is huge for Sark and the Longhorns staff this spring.

Moreover, Murphy originally suffered this injury to his ankle in his team’s state playoffs run in California late last year. He arrived on the Forty Acres a few months ago in a walking boot. But it sounds like he’s making some good progress in his rehab in the midst of spring ball.

Texas began their first official spring practice back on March 22. Now a few weeks deep into spring ball, Sark and the Longhorns wrapped up their first spring practice of this week on April 5.

And then, the spring football game is set to take place at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 23.
