3 key recruits visiting Texas this weekend
Tay’Shawn Wilson, CB
The highest-rated in-state target of the Longhorns 2023 class that is currently uncommitted that is visiting Austin this weekend is the speedy and talented four-star 5-foot-9 and 175-pound Houston-Mayde Creek cornerback Tay’Shawn Wilson. As one of the previously-scheduled visitors for this weekend over the last few weeks, Longhorns fans knew of this visit on the calendar for a while now.
And Wilson visiting Texas is still an important point in his recruitment that can continue to help the Longhorns make an impression on him at the right time. It feels like it won’t be long before Wilson narrows down another group of top schools once again this offseason.
This is Texas’ shot to firmly insert themselves among the next group of finalist schools for Wilson this spring.
Furthermore, Wilson is an incredibly gifted and elusive defensive back that could make an impact on multiple sides of the ball at the collegiate level. He’s a high school track star that can run a 10.6 second 100-meter dash time.
But don’t sleep on the ability of Wilson in pass coverage assignments either. While some might get fooled by his smaller size, Wilson is a very capable one-on-one defensive back in pass coverage. In fact, he had a career-best seven pass breakups and one interception with Mayde Creek during the 2021 season.
So far, Texas and safeties coach Blake Gideon have done some great work on the recruiting trail to keep them hanging around among the top schools in the race to land a commitment from Wilson. But this weekend will be an important marker in his recruiting timeline as we draw closer to a decision from the Houston-area product.
