This weekend didn’t have the same emphasis on the recruiting trail as the previous two for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff in the 2023 and 2024 Texas football recruiting classes. But Texas still hosted a few key targets of note for their 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes over the weekend that are worth discussing.

Among the targets of the Longhorns 2024 class to note that visited Austin this weekend is the highly touted four-star Buford (GA) edge rusher/athlete KingJoseph Edwards. This incredibly talented and versatile 6-foot-5 and 245-pound Georgia native is definitely one of the newer big-time targets to watch on the radar for the Longhorns 2024 class this spring.

And Texas got to host Edwards for the first time in 2022 this weekend. This is a great time for the Longhorns to get Edwards to campus for a visit given how his recruitment is starting to play out this offseason.

There are some notable SEC programs such as the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Texas A&M Aggies, among a couple of others, that are trying to get an edge in the race to land a commitment from Edwards this spring. If Texas wants to get in the mix among the top schools in the recruitment of Edwards, now has to be the time.

Texas football has an “exceptional” visit with the key 4-Star Buford EDGE/ATH KingJoseph Edwards this weekend

It sounds like Sark and the Longhorns staff did a great job this weekend of making the impression they needed on Edwards and his camp. Right down to where Edwards feels like he’s a good fit schematically and positionally on the defensive side of the ball, it sounds like Texas gave him the right pitch.

According to a report from Horns247 this weekend (paid content), Edwards feels like this was an “exceptional visit” overall. He also noted that “they like me at pass rusher and that’s my specialty so it works out perfect”, which is important to highlight coming out of the weekend.

You have to give credit to the likes of Sark, defensive line coach Bo Davis, and defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski for making the right impression on Edwards during this visit. Edwards seemingly took a very positive mindset from this visit in terms of his connection with the coaching staff and the plans they would have for him playing along the defensive front once he reaches the collegiate level.

Moreover, Edwards also mentioned in this piece from Horns247 that he is planning to return for a visit to Austin in June for the Texas camp. This really opens the door for Texas to make some big moves in the race to land a commitment from Edwards in the next few months.

Texas currently holds commitments from two recruits in the 2024 class. Sark and the Longhorns staff will look to continue building up momentum on the recruiting trail for their 2024 class heading into the summer. They clearly built up momentum in the recruitment of Edwards coming out of this key weekend visit.
