In order to take this critical three-game weekend series against the No. 23 ranked TCU Horned Frogs in the midst of Big 12 play, head coach David Pierce and No. 7 ranked Texas baseball needed a win on the afternoon of April 10. Texas split the first two of this three-game weekend series against the Horned Frogs on April 8 and 9.

But Pierce and the Longhorns were facing a difficult challenge against a hungry Horned Frogs team on this day to take the weekend series two games to one.

Nonetheless, the Longhorns were able to pull it out in the end behind a quality start from the sophomore left-hander Lucas Gordon. In this game, Gordon gave the Longhorns nearly six full innings of work on the mound with two earned runs, five hits allowed, just one walk, and four strikeouts.

This was a really nice bounce-back performance for Gordon on the mound after having a tough outing last weekend against the Oklahoma Sooners. While Gordon still managed to get the win against the Sooners back on April 3, he did give up four earned runs in less than four innings of work on the mound.

We really saw the best version of Gordon since his March 27 start in a key win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Moreover, Texas also got the bullpen to close things out in solid fashion. The Texas bullpen didn’t waiver much late in this one as they gave up just one earned. The pitching staff led the way for the Longhorns to get the win over the Horned Frogs on this day by the final score of 7-3.

This was the most convincing win of the weekend for the Longhorns.

Texas also got a solid effort from the offense late in this one. Ivan Melendez led the way with two hits, one home run, and three runs batted in. Melendez’s home run came at a key point early in this game as he would knot the game back up at two runs apiece.

We saw the likes of Melendez, Austin Todd, and Silas Ardoin, combine for eight hits, four runs batted in, two runs scored, and no strikeouts in this game. They all contributed to an effort for Texas that saw them produce a dozen hits and seven runs.

The defense was also solid on this day for the Longhorns as they had no errors to one for the Horned Frogs.

All in all, this win for the Longhorns is big to help this team continue to generate momentum heading into the thick of the Big 12 slate. Texas has now taken each of their last two series in Big 12 play, which came over Oklahoma and TCU.
