The most notorious transfer portal target remaining uncommitted at this point of the offseason for the Longhorns is the former TCU Horned Frogs two-time All-Big 12 senior edge rusher/defensive end Ochaun Mathis. Texas fans are counting down the days until a decision comes down from the touted Mathis.

With the anticipated decision from Mathis coming down at the end of this month, it might not be long before Texas moves the number to five commitments out of the portal this offseason. But it’s still not necessarily a done deal yet that the Longhorns are going to for sure win the race to land a commitment from Mathis.

Mathis still appeared to have a successful visit with head coach Scott Frost and the Nebraska Cornhuskers during their spring football game last weekend.

However, the fact of the matter is that Mathis could fill potentially the biggest positional need that the Longhorns have remaining on this side of the ball this offseason. Mathis is a proven and capable edge rusher that would make an immediate impact on the pass rush for Texas, despite his noted dip in production last year.

Mathis already has more than 100 career quarterback pressures under his belt. There is not a single Longhorns player on the current roster that has even half as many quarterback pressures in their collegiate careers to date.

There might not be another edge rusher that could make the same type of big splash impact for the Longhorns to boost the pass rush right away than Mathis heading into the 2022 season.
