3 spring transfers that can turn Texas into a Big 12 Title contender
Amarius Mims, OT
Turning the attention to the offensive side of the ball and we can see a player that just emerged in the transfer portal for the Longhorns that can make an immediate difference while helping to change the program for the better over the long haul. Texas can find this type of program-changing force along the offensive line in the former Georgia Bulldogs redshirt freshman offensive tackle Amarius Mims.
It was a massive loss for head coach Kirby Smart and the Dawgs to lose the former elite five-star recruit and Cochran, GA, native Mims to the transfer portal this week. Mims was one of the brightest pieces of the future in the trenches for Georgia. And that came in the midst of a very talented group along the offensive line in Athens.
Moreover, while Mims doesn’t have multiple years of starting experience under his belt, he does have enough proven film at the collegiate level likely to win a starting job right away for offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood. And it helps that Flood has a good level of familiarity with the towering 6-foot-7 and 330-pound offensive tackle Mims from his time as the Alabama offensive line coach.
Flood and the Longhorns would be able to solidify the right tackle position this spring if they come somehow lock in on a commitment from Mims out of the portal. In just over 120 snaps played on offense last season for the Dawgs, Mims was one of the highest-graded freshmen in terms of blocking grade in the SEC. He could pass up the likes of Andrej Karic and Christian Jones at the right tackle position along the Texas offensive line pretty fast.
