The most established target for the Texas football program out of the NCAA Transfer Portal so far this offseason that remains uncommitted is the former TCU Horned Frogs two-time All-Big 12 senior edge rusher/defensive end Ochaun Mathis. Texas was after Mathis really since the first day he put his name in the transfer portal a few months ago.

And it now looks like Mathis is drawing closer to a decision as he wraps up the final semester of his studies at TCU in Fort Worth. Mathis announced on his Twitter timeline on the morning of April 11 that he will have a decision coming “at the end of this month”.

This decision is coming a bit sooner than originally anticipated. But it was expected he would announce his decision around May or June, so it’s probably not all that far off.

Moreover, this is interesting timing given the fact that Mathis was just on campus in Lincoln for the Nebraska Cornhuskers spring football game. From what we saw based on Mathis’ social media activity and most accounts coming out of his weekend visit to Lincoln, everything went well with head coach Scott Frost and the Huskers staff.

Texas football still the favorite for TCU EDGE transfer Ochaun Mathis?

But there are still multiple indications that Mathis is still leaning toward Texas over the other four finalist schools he’s considering for his commitment out of the portal at the end of this month. A report from Horns247 on April 11 (paid content) indicates that while the Nebraska visit went well, Texas should still be confident about its position in the race to land a commitment from Mathis out of the portal.

It sounds like that connection between Mathis and new Texas special assistant to the head coach Gary Patterson gives the Longhorns an edge. The proximity of Mathis to home also gives an edge to Texas over other suitors such as the Huskers.

And another report from Inside Texas this week (paid content) mentions the fact that it wouldn’t surprise them to see Mathis in Austin for a visit before his decision at the end of the month. That is important to note. And if that comes to fruition, it would be a great indicator of Texas being a potential frontrunner to nab his pledge out of the portal.

Edge rusher is likely the biggest positional need remaining for the Longhorns to address in the transfer portal this offseason. And there are no other announcements among transfer portal targets that are more anticipated for the Longhorn faithful at this point of the offseason than Mathis.
