Texas QB Quinn Ewers getting more first-team reps in practice this week
More than halfway into spring camp, second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program are finally seeing this squad make some much-needed strides on each side of the ball. Texas is starting to see some real progress at the skill positions on the offensive side of the ball in the last week or so. And the defense is starting to see some players rise to the occasion in the last few scrimmages.
Sark and the Longhorns staff namely saw one extremely vital player on the offensive side of the ball step up in the last week, especially in last weekend’s scrimmage. And that one player of note is the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers.
Last weekend, Ewers was apparently one of the best players that showed out in one of the final weekend scrimmages of spring camp. His big day was highlighted by a bomb he tossed to sophomore star wideout Xavier Worthy that went for at least 50 yards and a touchdown.
Moreover, it sounds like Ewers is off to a good start in spring practice this week too.
According to a report from Inside Texas on April 12 (paid content), Ewers was getting some of the first-team practice reps ahead of rising junior quarterback Hudson Card this morning. This is one of the first times that has occurred.
Ewers and Card do often split the first-team reps. But it’s rare that Ewers gets some of the first-in-line reps in spring practice thus far. For the most part, this is a new development. And it could be a sign of Ewers’ progress in camp in the last week or so. But that might be reading into this situation a bit too far.
Texas football QB Quinn Ewers got more first-team reps than usual on April 12 over Hudson Card
Yet, it is still a significant development if this continues throughout the rest of spring practice that Ewers is getting more first-in-line reps than Card.
A report from Orangebloods with practice notes and nuggets on April 12 (paid content) also indicates that Ewers got the first-team reps ahead of Card in a few drills. This report also mentioned this as a pretty notable development, which most Longhorns fans would have to agree with.
The fact of the matter is that Ewers looks to be making the right strides at the right time. It wasn’t too likely that he was going to come in this spring and blow people away consistently right away in camp. The realistic expectation was that it was going to take Ewers a few weeks at minimum to get adjusted and find his stride on the Forty Acres this offseason.
But if last weekend was actually a turning point for Ewers where he’s really ready to begin taking the reins of the offense, this will be a very notable part of the offseason timeline for Sark and the Longhorns. Granted, we shouldn’t overreact to this news from just one day of Ewers getting some first-team reps over Card in practice.
Texas is currently more than halfway through spring camp. And the Orange-White spring football game is set to take place on April 23 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
