Texas WR Xavier Worthy responds to Johntay Cook’s trophy jab
One of the top targets of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff, four-star DeSoto wide receiver Johntay Cook, made waves with a comment he made on his visit to Austin earlier this month. Cook had a moment surface on his visit to Texas a little more than one week ago where he commented on the lack of football trophies on display.
Cook mentioned at one point in a video filmed during his visit to Austin where he essentially said that Texas has a lot of trophies on display, but they’re all of the swimming variety. That was something that made waves on social media.
But it was also something that Cook never really doubled down on and likely won’t impact the outcome of his recruitment in any major way when it’s all said and done.
There was something added to the Cook saga early this week, though.
Star Texas football WR Xavier Worthy responds to trophy comments from 4-Star WR Johntay Cook
Rising sophomore star Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy posted some of the national title trophies for the Longhorns on his Twitter timeline on the late morning of April 12. Worthy tweeted directly at Cook in this post too with the message “here u go”.
Cook then responded to Worthy with a quote tweet just showing an emoji looking up.
This exchange between Worthy and Cook likely goes to show how much energy and effort some of the top Longhorns players are putting in on the recruiting trail to connect with the top targets of the next few recruiting classes.
There’s no better player for Sark and the Longhorns staff to have to engage with Cook on social media than Worthy either it would seem.
Yet, this situation is likely to not hold much significance in the end in terms of where Cook ultimately commits. But it is interesting to see Worthy doing something like this to engage with Cook on the recruiting trail in a public way on social media.
Texas currently holds commitments from three recruits in the 2023 class, with the latest coming from the underrated three-star North Crowley linebacker S’Maje Burrell. Cook is one of the biggest and most crucial skill position targets for the Longhorns 2023 class to sign when it’s all said and done for this cycle.
