Georgia transfer OT Amarius Mims eyeing a Texas visit
One of the most potent players to surface in the NCAA Transfer Portal this spring as it relates to the Texas football program is the former elite five-star recruit and redshirt freshman Georgia Bulldogs offensive tackle Amarius Mims. As a very appealing target out of the transfer portal at a position of need for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood, Mims is a name that should catch the eye of Texas fans.
Mims is likely going to be one of the very best offensive tackles that surface in the transfer portal at any point of this offseason. Thus, it makes sense why Flood and the Longhorns are pursuing him quickly this spring.
And according to a report from Inside Texas on April 13 (paid content), Texas is one of the schools that Mims is considering visiting after putting his name in the portal earlier this week. He doesn’t officially have a visit on the books yet with the Longhorns. But it looks like Texas is on a shortlist of schools he’s considering booking a trip in the days and/or weeks ahead.
The one school that he does have a visit scheduled with is Florida State. Head coach Mike Norvell and the Seminoles will be a competitor to beat in the race to land a commitment from Mims out of the transfer portal.
Texas football could be getting a visit from Georgia transfer OT Amarius Mims
Some of the other schools to watch are Miami and Ohio State. And there could be some others that come to the surface in the next few days as Mims is still in the early stages of his recruitment out of the transfer portal.
Moreover, if Texas realistically wants to contend with the likes of Florida State and Miami in the recruitment of Mims out of the portal, they’ll need to get him scheduled for a visit soon. Florida State is making some quick moves in this recruitment and could be tough to beat in the end for Flood and the Longhorns.
But offensive tackle is a noted position of need for the Longhorns this offseason. And it’s good to see Texas targeting one of the top players at the position that is likely to emerge in the portal this spring.
Mims got a little more than 120 offensive snaps last season for head coach Kirby Smart and the Dawgs. He graded out well in the snaps he did get but likely entered the portal this spring due to the fact that he was facing an uphill battle to win a starting job for the upcoming season.
