Another highly decorated former Ohio Valley Conference star big man surfaced in the transfer portal earlier this month in the former Morehead State sophomore power forward/center Johni Broome. The reigning Ohio Valley Conference Tournament MVP and Defensive Player of the Year Broome would definitely be a big splash addition for Texas.

The lengthy and gritty 6-foot-10 and 235-pound Broome is likely going to be one of the very best defenders among big men that appears in the transfer portal at any point of this offseason. He averaged nearly four blocks per game and 11 rebounds last season en route to posting some of the best defensive stats in the entire country.

In fact, Broome’s 10.5 rebounds per game and 3.9 blocks were both good to rank inside the top 10 in the NCAA in the season that was. His sparkling 13.9 block percentage from last season was also good for fourth in the NCAA.

Last but not least, Broome racked up 2.9 defensive win shares and a defensive rating just south of 85, which were both good to rank in the top 10 in the NCAA last season.

It’s really hard for me to find a more impactful addition out of the portal among big men at this point of the offseason for Beard and the Longhorns than Broome.

The only hold-up I could see to Texas pursuing Broome this offseason is the fact that they currently sit among the five finalist schools for Aimaq. They might want to keep prioritizing Aimaq until a decision arrives from him.
