The newest addition to the secondary among transfers for the Longhorns this offseason is the former Ohio State redshirt freshman cornerback Ryan Watts. As one of the four notable additions for the Longhorns out of the transfer portal so far this offseason, it looks like Watts is very likely going to lock up a starting corner spot before too long.

A report from Horns247 this week (paid content) indicates that Watts is well on track to lock down a starting spot with his consistent play in spring camp thus far. More specifically, this report says that Watts essentially has a “stranglehold” on one of the starting cornerback spots as they see it now in spring practice.

It will be interesting to see how Watts matches up with some of the top wide receivers in the spring game next weekend. From the looks of it, we could be witnessing some fun matchups next weekend if and when Watts faces the likes of star sophomore wideout Xavier Worthy, redshirt junior Jordan Whittington, redshirt sophomore Isaiah Neyor, etc.

Moreover, Watts putting together a consistently solid showing in spring ball looks to be more than enough for him to lock up a starting spot opposite of senior cornerback D’Shawn Jamison. Later on this year, he might be pushed more by the freshman duo of Jaylon Guilbeau and Terrance Brooks.

But for the time being (especially with Gilbeau suspended at the moment), one of the starting spots at corner looks to be Watts’ for the taking.
