Texas QB Quinn Ewers skittish on talking about Ohio State
One of the most hotly-discussed storylines for the Texas football program this week concerned the press conference with the top two quarterbacks. Rising junior quarterback Hudson Card and the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers spoke on multiple topics in media availability earlier this week, including the looming competition for the starting job at the position.
Yet, an important topic that was obviously going to come up in media availability with Ewers, in particular, this week concerned his decision-making process when he transferred from Ohio State to Texas a few months back. Ewers specifically transferred from Ohio State to Texas back in early December after spending just one semester in Columbus.
It was a pretty quick move for Ewers to leave Columbus to come back to his home state of Texas to land on the Forty Acres. But there were a few clear factors that played a role in getting Ewers to the school he originally committed to out of Southlake Carroll High School a couple of years ago.
First and foremost, Ewers looks to have a clear path to immediately win the starting quarterback job in Austin. That’s definitely not the case if he stuck around in Columbus as star quarterback CJ Stroud is likely going to occupy the starting job for at least the next year.
Also, NIL had to play a major factor in Ewers landing in Austin. Ewers likely got a pretty lucrative NIL deal that came with his commitment to Texas out of the portal. But he sensibly hasn’t commented much on that matter in the last few months.
The themes of Ewers avoiding the discussion of the details of NIL since he committed to Texas out of the portal and along with answering any speculation of what went wrong at Ohio State were apparent in media availability this week. Ewers gave pretty brief and undetailed answers to really any question that came his way in the interview this week regarding his transfer process from Ohio State and the details of any NIL deals he has at Texas.
Texas football QB Quinn Ewers avoids speculative topics in a press conference this week
It seems like Ewers is sticking to a clear and laid out plan where he wants to have a successful run as the starting quarterback with the Longhorns at least for the next couple of years while making the most of the new NIL rules.
That tends to be the takeaways that a lot of voices around the Longhorns media landscape following his interview in media availability earlier this week. Ewers is probably going to speak with caution on these same matters throughout this offseason as he’s looking to get his career on track with the Longhorns.
Moreover, this is also probably the best approach that the insanely highly touted Ewers could have in his first semester at the University of Texas. He seemingly is doing his best to avoid unnecessary distraction by creating any media speculation surrounding his past.
It makes little to no sense for a young quarterback such as Ewers to go about creating distractions with the media concerning a matter such as any shortcomings he faced during his brief stint with head coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes.
Second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff have done a pretty good job so far this spring of helping Ewers make a smooth transition into the program. He’s made apparent progress over the course of the first few weeks of spring camp too. That is a sign that the process that Sark and his staff are taking to effectively get Ewers integrated with the program is working.
Ewers and the Longhorns officially began spring practice back on March 22. And Texas is now a little over one week away from the Orange-White spring football game, which is set to take place on April 23 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
