Texas getting official visit from UCLA transfer LB Caleb Johnson
News that was expected to come at some point in the next week or so did officially surface this weekend for the Texas football program. Texas will now be hosting the former JUCO linebacker and rising senior UCLA Bruins transfer Caleb Johnson.
A report from Horns247 on April 16 indicates that the Longhorns will now be hosting Johnson on an official visit. Texas will be getting the second visit from Johnson since he originally entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on April 18. At least, the official visit will be starting for Johnson with the Longhorns on April 18. But it could last multiple days it appears.
And the other visit that Johnson already took was with new head coach Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes. That came earlier this week.
Former Texas football JUCO LB commit and UCLA transfer Caleb Johnson set to visit Austin
It appears that Texas and Miami are the clear top two schools in the race to land a commitment from Johnson out of the transfer portal this spring. He hasn’t really entertained the pursuit of any other schools from what we know publicly about his recruitment.
Moreover, Johnson would be able to help the Longhorns immediately fill a position of need. And he has a good level of familiarity with the program as Johnson is a former three-star JUCO LB commit and enrollee at Texas.
But Johnson really proved his worth during his two seasons playing for head coach Chip Kelly and the Bruins in the PAC-12 South. In the last two seasons, Johnson registered 89 combined tackles, seven tackles for loss, five sacks, two interceptions, four pass breakups, and one fumble recovery.
Johnson was one of the more productive and versatile linebackers in the PAC-12 since 2020. If he were to land on the Forty Acres once he announces his decision this offseason, he would likely immediately contend for a starting spot at the mike or will linebacker spots.
There were a lot of headlines for the Longhorns concerning the transfer portal this weekend. The likes of former TCU senior edge rusher/defensive end Ochaun Mathis and Alabama freshman wide receiver Agiye Hall both visited campus this weekend.
