Honorable mentions

There are a handful of losses for the Longhorns to the transfer portal in the last few years that are still worth noting on this list. They either don’t make it on the list due to the lack of certainty of a clear path to stardom or just the fact that they haven’t found their next landing spot out of the transfer portal this offseason as of yet.

Casey Thompson, QB

What might be the most notable name on this list overall is the former Texas starting redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson. After spending a few years fighting his way to becoming the Texas starting quarterback, Thompson was essentially pushed aside early this offseason once Texas landed a commitment from the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers.

Thompson landed with the Nebraska Cornhuskers out of the portal, and looks to be the favorite to win the starting job in Lincoln this year.

Chris Adimora, S

This is a case where a talented former Longhorns player and ex-blue-chip recruit just needs to find the right home out of the portal.

There were plenty of flashes that Adimora showed in the last few years, but nothing stuck on a consistent basis. Adimora still brings a good amount of talent and potential to the table. If he can find the right landing spot out of the portal, he has the potential to become an all-conference-type performer right away.

Tyler Owens, S

Another former Longhorns player and blue-chip recruit that at least gets a mention on this list is reshirt junior safety Tyler Owens. While I wouldn’t anticipate Owens to have the type of immediate impact potential of someone like Adimora out of the portal this year, he could still provide a spark to the secondary for new head coach Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders this coming season.

Owens is still a former five-star recruit that has plenty of potential. He just was never able to hold a significant role in the two-deep in the Texas secondary in the last three years.
