The Texas quarterback room has a very promising top trio in the mix right now between the Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers, rising junior Hudson Card, and incoming freshman Maalik Murphy.

But Texas boasting such a talented trio to top the quarterback depth chart this year means that there is one other player on scholarship in this room that is left out of the equation. The former three-star recruit and Austin native Charles Wright is about to enter his third season with Texas, but he has yet to take a single game snap at the quarterback position.

Wright is likely the fourth or fifth quarterback up on the depth chart for the Longhorns this spring. He could even be falling in line behind the former walk-on Ben Ballard this year.

Moreover, with Wright being the lowest scholarship quarterback on the depth chart in his third year on the Forty Acres, the clock might be ticking on his time with the program. He might want to find another program where he will have a more realistic opportunity to make an impact.

A common reason for Texas to lose players to the transfer portal will be a lack of opportunity at a path to playing time. And that is the exact reason we’re outlining here as to why Wright could soon enter the portal.
