The hottest news around college hoops so far this offseason has to do with all the movement in the NCAA Transfer Portal, in which head coach Chris Beard and the Texas basketball program are now firmly involved. Beard and his staff have now lost a couple of key guards to the transfer portal and picked one up earlier this week.

Beard and the Longhorns saw the likes of the defensive standout sophomore guard Devin Askew and experienced senior guard Courtney Ramey enter the portal in the last few weeks. Askew was the most recent transfer portal entrant for the Longhorns, as his name surfaced on the open market on April 19.

But Texas was able to essentially replace the depth lost by the departure of Askew right away as Beard and his staff reeled in a portal commitment from the former New Mexico State Aggies rising super senior shooting guard Jabari Rice. Texas got the commitment from Rice via his announcement on social media on the night of April 19.

Who could be the second portal addition for Texas basketball after landing NMSU transfer G Jabari Rice?

That literally came within hours after the news of Askew entering the portal surfaced.

There is still a long way to go for Beard and the Longhorns in terms of the work they have to do in the transfer portal early this offseason. But it looks like landing a commitment out of Rice is a good way to start. The three-time All-WAC guard is a model of consistency and should be able to make some notable contributions right away while bringing an experienced voice to the locker room.

Yet, here’s a look at who the next addition for the Longhorns could be out of the portal after landing Rice on April 19.
