4 players that will suffer from Texas negating spring game
Hudson Card, QB
The impact that not playing in an actual spring game will have on the rising junior quarterback Hudson Card is probably the slightest of any of the Longhorns players on this list. But the fact of the matter is that Card really needs every platform and opportunity he can get to prove a point that he is worth getting the starting quarterback job over Ewers this offseason.
It seems like the more time that passes this spring, the more momentum goes in favor of Ewers to eventually win the starting quarterback job over Card. A solid spring game outing for Card might’ve slowed the momentum in that conversation. But that obviously won’t be the case now.
Fewer fans will be interested in watching what happens during this non-standard format spring game/scrimmage this weekend. Thus, there won’t be as much buzz surrounding Card coming out of the weekend in all likelihood.
To put more of a positive spin on this from Card’s perspective, at least Ewers won’t be able to light it up in an actual spring game this weekend. That is something that might be able to work in Card’s favor that a lot of these reps will come in situational-style plays. Card has more experience with situational football under Sark in practice and with live-game reps.
Yet, the fact that Card won’t be able to get actual spring game reps, and look good in the process, is ultimately doing to be a detriment to him. He’s facing an increasingly difficult quarterback competition this offseason, and it won’t make anything easier for him to win this job if Texas doesn’t have an actual spring game.
