Texas Basketball: 3 best transfer landing spots for Devin Askew
San Diego State
It seems like some of the more talented Longhorns in the transfer portal this offseason are likely going to at least land with a recognizable major or mid-major conference team at their next destination. A player like Askew just seems too talented not to find his way with a solid hoops program.
Granted, Askew will have to be very cautious and picky with his next landing spot as this will be his third team in three years. That’s why it makes sense for Askew to take into account a combination of factors when deciding on his next landing spot.
Some of those factors could include proximity to home, immediate opportunities for playing time, and finding a system that plays to his strengths on a consistent basis.
That’s where it looks like the San Diego State Aztecs out of the Mountain West Conference could offer an appealing destination out of the portal for Askew. He would get to be closer to his hometown of Sacramento, CA, while playing for a team that was very competitive both in the MWC and on the national scene in the last few seasons.
San Diego State also could be losing a plethora of seniors this offseason which will thin out their depth in the backcourt unit. Askew could help replace some of that lost depth while legitimately having a shot to start at some point next season.
Another factor that could contribute to the Aztecs being a consideration for Askew out of the portal this offseason is the fact that this coaching staff under head coach Brian Dutcher offered him out of high school a few cycles ago. He has connections with this coaching staff going back a few years which could help re-establish communication this spring.
