One of the bigger storylines for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program specifically on April 22 concerns the looming decision of the former UCLA Bruins junior transfer linebacker Caleb Johnson. After announcing on his Twitter timeline on the afternoon of April 21 that he would be making his decision on the following day, Johnson now has Texas and the Miami Hurricanes waiting heading into the weekend.

Sark and the Longhorns staff look to be one of the two programs in the running to land a commitment from Johnson on April 22. New head coach Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes are the other program in the running to get Johnson out of the portal.

The decision from Johnson is specifically set to be announced on April 22, at 5 p.m. CT.

Johnson was on campus in Austin for a visit earlier this week. And while it looks like the Longhorns staff feel like they made a strong impression on Johnson, Miami still seems to be setting the pace in this recruitment out of the portal.

Since Texas and Miami were the only two schools that Johnson visited, there is only really one competitor that Sark and his staff have to worry about.

But this begs the question, which team actually stacks up as the frontrunner to land a commitment from Johnson?

A recent report from 247Sports this week (paid content) indicates that Miami is the “team to beat” in the race to land a commitment from Johnson. And that largely seems to be the sentiment in terms of what is being heard from both sides of this discussion.

You definitely can’t just count Texas out for Johnson’s decision. But it does look like you would have to consider Miami the top school in the Johnson sweepstakes if there were one to be named at the moment.

Landing a commitment from Johnson out of the portal would be a nice way to kickoff the weekend festivities for the Longhorns with the non-standard format spring game just over 24 hours away. Texas is set to take part in what will be an altered spring game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 23, with the start time set for 6 p.m. CT.
