Dick Vitale praises Texas QB Quinn Ewers from spring game
The showing that we were all waiting for finally took place for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program on the night of April 23. Texas took part in the altered version of the annual Orange-White spring football game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium to cap spring camp on April 23.
This was the highly-anticipated debut this offseason in some sort of game action of the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers. And he made some plays where he truly impressed the media and fans alike in the spring game this weekend.
What was definitely the most impressive play of the spring game, though, for Ewers was a beautiful deep ball that he tossed to the former Wyoming Cowboys breakout redshirt freshman wide receiver Isaiah Neyor. That pass from Ewers to Neyor went for 72 yards and a touchdown.
It was the first touchdown of this non-standard format spring game for Ewers. And in terms of the passing touchdowns that Longhorn Network actually caught live on camera for this spring game, it was the second in total for Ewers on the night.
Legendary college hoops voice Dick Vitale compares Texas football QB Quinn Ewers to Joe Burrow after spring game
Moreover, one of the big-time media personalities that looked to be seriously impressed by this deep ball from Ewers to Neyor was the longtime college basketball legendary voice, Dick Vitale. Dicky V tweeted out on the morning of April 24 that he thought this pass from Ewers was flashy and he had one interesting comp after seeing it.
Vitale compared this pass from Ewers to Neyor to the likes of the former Ohio State and LSU Tigers superstar quarterback Joe Burrow. It sounds like this highlight from Ewers reminded Vitale of what he saw from Burrow after transferring from Ohio State to LSU.
That is a very lofty comparison as Burrow obviously won a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship in a legendary 2019 season with the Tigers. Ewers has yet to even have one passing attempt in a college football game in his career thus far.
Texas concluded spring ball this weekend with the Orange-White game on April 23. Ewers and the Longhorns are set to open up the regular season on Sep. 4 at home at DKR against Louisiana-Monroe.
