Honorable mentions

Ochaun Mathis, DE/EDGE

Although the former TCU Horned Frogs two-time All-Big 12 senior edge rusher/defensive end Ochaun Mathis would not be a member of the Longhorns 2023 class if he were to commit in the next week or so, he deserves to be mentioned on the list of next possible additions for Texas this spring. Mathis is expected to make a decision before the end of the month.

After getting Mathis on campus for the second straight visit, and his official visit to Texas, things look good for Sark and his staff to get him out of the portal. Texas looks to have a great shot to beat out head coach Scott Frost and the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the race to land a commitment out of the portal from Mathis.

Lafayette Kaiuway, TE

There are two tight ends that ultimately made this list in one way or another. But it’s hard to tell if special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and the Longhorns want to take two at the position in the 2023 class.

And with how much the three-star Sam Houston (TX) tight end Lafayette Kaiuway has grown hot and cold with Texas since last fall, I don’t know how much confidence I would have in him being a take in the 2023 class when it’s all said and done.

Samu Taumanupepe, DL

Literally, one of the most sizable targets of the Longhorns 2023 class this spring is the rising three-star Atascocita defensive lineman Samu Taumanupepe. The towering 6-foot-3 and 375-pound Taumanupepe firmly remained on the Longhorns’ radar since the turn of the calendar year.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see him commit to Texas before fall camp begins in a few months.
