Steve Sarkisian rightfully excited about Texas QB Quinn Ewers
Texas football took part in a non-standard format of the annual Orange-White spring football game on the night of April 23. That officially brought spring camp to a close for Texas, which lasted for just over one month, starting back on March 22 with the first practice.
While we will get more into an actual breakdown of the film we saw in the altered spring game for Texas freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers later in the day, it’s worth noting what second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian had to say about his performance this weekend. Sark seemed very optimistic about what he saw from both quarterbacks in the spring game. He spoke highly of both Ewers and rising junior quarterback Hudson Card following the festivities on April 23.
That seemed to really be the case with how he talked about the showing from Ewers’ outing in the spring game.
Sark mentioned in the post-spring game press conference on April 23 that he is very “happy with the growth” that he’s seen from both Ewers and Card. It is also worth noting that he is “really pleased’ with where the quarterback room is at for Texas compared to last offseason.
Those takeaways from Sark in the press conference this weekend were definitely some encouraging remarks. It was also evident that Card and Ewers, respectively, had made some necessary strides in their own way in the altered spring game.

Ewers made some really impressive throws, showing off all the incredible arm angles and velocities he’s able to spin the ball at. That was highlighted by an incredible deep ball that went for more than 70 yards from Ewers to the former Wyoming Cowboys breakout redshirt freshman wide receiver Isaiah Neyor that also went for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Card seemingly showed some improved presence in the pocket and used his wheels to make some plays with his legs. Card also scored a rushing touchdown in this game, which could be a sign of his improved awareness and feel in the pocket.
Granted, we obviously can’t take all that much away in terms of pocket presence for a quarterback from what happens in a spring game.
There were still some downsides, though, to what we saw from both Card and Ewers in the spring game this weekend. We will definitely be touching more on that later, but it is worth noting that Ewers did throw a bad pick down the middle of the field right to the returning super senior safety Anthony Cook.
That was a good example of the highs and lows that can come from that incredible arm that Ewers possesses. We’ve heard time and time again about some of the inconsistencies he can experience in this regard throughout spring ball, and it will be critical for him to make strides in this area this fall.
Texas will now have a couple of months off before summer workouts take part on the Forty Acres later this offseason. We will have some time to digest what happened in this non-standard format spring game before that time arrives.
