With all the headway that the converted cornerback and rising junior Kitan Crawford made during spring ball, there is going to be a lot of pressure on the fellow rising junior defensive back Jerrin Thompson entering the fall. Crawford is probably going to enter fall camp as the presumed favorite to win the starting job at boundary safety.

Thompson came into spring ball as the pick by at least some Texas fans and media outlets to be the starter at the boundary safety position come this fall. But those picks quickly faded as spring camp moved along for the last few weeks.

The reasons why Thompson is facing a real uphill battle for the rest of the offseason to win the starting job at one of the safety spots are mostly out of his control. Thompson didn’t necessarily have a bad showing in spring camp by most accounts. He just wasn’t as good as other competing safeties for the starting job such as Crawford.

Even some of the other underclassman safeties such as BJ Allen Jr. and JD Coffey seemingly impressed the coaching staff during the spring. Thompson was one of the few safeties that probably just stagnated in the eyes of the coaching staff.

It doesn’t help that there were a couple of bad angles that Thompson took for tackles in the spring game last weekend.

All in all, with the Texas secondary needing to make some pretty massive strides this fall, it could be that Thompson is on the outside looking in for the starting boundary safety battle in camp come August.
