This is yet another case of a Longhorns player that wasn’t an overwhelming favorite to win a starting job heading into spring ball but was presumed to compete more than he actually did in the last few weeks. Rising redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Andrej Karic was one of the few offensive linemen for the Longhorns that missed the spring game due to injury.

From what we heard coming out of spring practice when Karic was healthy, it didn’t sound like he did much on a consistent basis to prove to offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood that he is worthy of locking up a starting spot. He’s likely going to have to prove that in fall camp now.

There’s still a decent to good chance that Karic is a major player in the position battle to win one of the starting offensive tackle spots in fall camp. Karic will need to show some pretty major strides in terms of his footwork and hand placement in fall camp if he is to challenge for a starting job.

Karic had the unfortunate occurrence of missing the spring game last weekend due to an ankle sprain he suffered about halfway through spring practice. There’s not really anything he can do about that. But it didn’t help his chances to win a starting job in the trenches this fall that others such as rising sophomore Hayden Conner stepped up while taking first-team reps in place of the injured Karic.

Texas also has other incoming freshmen that could challenge for a starting spot here this fall including the former five-star recruit Kelvin Banks and four-star Malik Agbo. Karic will have a tough battle on his hands to officially lock up a starting offensive tackle spot this fall.
