3 Texas players that could lose starting spots post-spring
Moro Ojomo, DL
The boldest of the bold predictions that I have on this list among the Longhorns players that could be losing a starting spot by the time the fall arrives is the returning super senior defensive lineman Moro Ojomo. As one of the most experienced defensive linemen returning for the Longhorns this year, it looked like Ojomo would be a heavy favorite to win a starting spot come this fall.
Yet, there were a few occurrences during spring ball that probably didn’t help Ojomo’s chances of winning a starting job out of the gates this coming season.
First and foremost, the comments from Ojomo concerning the state of the program and some of the things that have transpired behind closed doors that he feels held this team back in recent years in a press conference a couple of weeks ago definitely didn’t help his cause with Sark. It sounds like Ojomo won’t be speaking to the media for a good while, and Sark clearly wasn’t happy with how he handled this spotlight.
Secondly, Ojomo was going to face some competition from other talented defensive linemen this year no matter what. Texas signed a very solid 2022 class along the defensive line. This was also a position group that was one of the deeper for the Longhorns on either side of the ball heading into the offseason.
I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if the likes of incoming freshman Jaray Bledsoe, redshirt sophomore Vernon Broughton, and namely the talented rising junior Alfred Collins take some reps away from Ojomo this fall.
All in all, I would anticipate Collins to now be the heavy favorite to win the starting defensive tackle spot in Pete Kwiatkowski’s 3-4 defensive front at the outset of fall camp. But it’s definitely not safe to assume that this starting spot is locked up at this point of the offseason.
