Analyst believes Texas QB Quinn Ewers will be ‘definitive’ starter
All eyes during the altered spring game last weekend for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program fell on the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers. Texas was able to sign one of the few perfect-rated recruits in the modern era of college football recruiting rankings by nabbing Ewers out of the NCAA Transfer Portal back in December 2021.
With the looming quarterback competition taking place this offseason between Ewers and rising junior Hudson Card, Longhorns fans were looking to see if the former would be able to take hold of the starting job in spring ball. But the fact of the matter is that Sark and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee weren’t going to have many advantages in naming a starter this spring.
Texas seemingly was going to wait until the fall to announce a Week 1 starting quarterback no matter what.
But there are a number of Longhorns fans that already think this starting job is destined to go to Ewers. And that makes sense given the narrative surrounding his time on the Forty Acres thus far.
There weren’t many scenarios that could play out well for Sark and the Longhorns this fall if Ewers wasn’t the starting quarterback, barring Card surprising everyone and taking the college football world by storm.
Thus, Ewers is still widely expected to win the starting job at some point during fall camp.
Is the Texas football starting QB job already Quinn Ewers’ for the taking?
Texas saw Card beat out then redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson to win the starting job in fall camp last offseason. We could see the quarterback competition play out in a similar fashion this offseason compared to the timeline last year.
There are already some analysts/insiders around the college football media landscape, though, that are essentially making guarantees that Ewers will be the Week 1 starting quarterback over Card. In a recent edition of “The Late Kick” from 247Sports, Josh Pate mentioned that he had a source that said that Ewers will be the “definitive starter” this fall over Card.
And that source apparently made this remark of Ewers essentially being the definitive starter as of the conclusion of spring camp.
While this seems early to call the quarterback competition already, it really isn’t a bold prediction to say that Ewers will win the starting job over Ewers this fall. But there could be other twists and turns in this quarterback battle that makes calling it now a tough task.
Texas could want to utilize more of a two-quarterback system early in the regular season since their easiest opponent potentially of the entire 2022 campaign comes in Week 1. The Longhorns face Louisiana-Monroe on Sep. 3 in the regular season opener, which could be a chance for Sark and his staff to see how both Ewers and Card handle the spotlight.
But that is still all conjecture at this point in time.
For the time being, we have to take the strides that both Ewers and Card made in spring ball with a grain of salt. While it does seem like the momentum is trending in favor of Ewers winning the starting job at the conclusion of spring camp, we’re likely going to have to wait a few months at the very least to see who will officially be named the starter for Week 1.
Texas concluded spring camp officially on the night of April 23, with the non-standard format of the annual Orange-White Game taking place at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Ewers and the Longhorns are set to open up the regular season slate at home on Sep. 3 against Louisiana-Monroe out of the Sun Belt Conference.
