After a big weekend on the trail for the 2023 Texas football recruiting class within the last few days for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff, there’s a lot of excitement about the foundation being built for this group. Texas landed a pair of blue-chip skill position commitments over the weekend in four-star Aldine Eisenhower (TX) wide receiver Ryan Niblett and four-star DeSoto running back Tre Wisner.

Sark and the Longhorns staff nabbing commitments from both Niblett and Wisner for the 2023 class brings the total number of recruits in the mix now to five. And one of the four blue-chips that is committed to the Longhorns 2023 class is one that recently reaffirmed his commitment to Texas in the last week.

Four-star C.E. King defensive lineman Dylan Spencer was one of the surprise commitments of 2022 thus far for the Longhorns. Spencer committed to Texas back on March 15, giving Texas their first official pledge of this calendar year in the 2023 class.

Moreover, the commitment from Spencer was definitely one of the bigger surprises of this recruiting cycle thus far for Sark and the Longhorns staff. Spencer did have a good relationship building with defensive line coach Bo Davis prior to announcing his commitment last month. But he wasn’t expected to announce a decision in March.

4-Star 2023 DL commit Dylan Spencer reaffirms his status as “locked in” with Texas football

When a highly-touted blue-chip recruit such as Spencer announces a commitment early in the offseason, and in a surprise fashion, that can come with questions surrounding how firm he sits with that school for the rest of the year.

Yet, Spencer was able to essentially reaffirm his commitment last week, per a tweet from Mike Roach of 247Sports back on April 20. Spencer is reportedly “locked in” and “excited” about what’s to come for him with the Longhorns.

This is great to hear considering the fact that Davis and the Longhorns are looking to have Spencer be one of the primary pieces in this 2023 class along the defensive front. Spencer is also starting to build a real bond it seems with some of the other Longhorns commits and top targets for this 2023 class.

He could soon become one of the mainstays associated with this 2023 class if he continues to strengthen his ties with some of the other commits in the mix and the top targets for Sark and his staff.

Of the five commits currently in the Longhorns 2023 class, all but one are rated as four-star recruits. And the lone three-star commit in the 2023 class is a good one that definitely could soon reach blue-chip status in the North Crowley linebacker S’Maje Burrell.
