4 former elite Texas recruits bound to be first-round NFL Draft picks
Derek Stingley Jr., CB
As maybe the most talented prospect in this draft class, the former elite five-star recruit and LSU Tigers junior cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is definitely a big name to watch in the next few days.
During his recruitment out of high school, the Baton Rouge, LA, native had Texas as one of his top three or four schools. And while former Texas cornerbacks coach/recruiting coordinator Jason Washington put in a ton of energy and effort on the recruiting trail to push for Stingley, it eventually seemed like an impossible task to win him away from the in-state goliath LSU.
In terms of talent alone, Stingley should be considered a top-three pick in this draft class. But there are some issues that surfaced regarding Stingley’s draft stock of late that could sink him down to the middle of the first round.
DeMarvin Leal, DT
There weren’t many bigger battles on the recruiting trail between Texas and Texas A&M for an in-state five-star defensive lineman in the last half-decade than took place for the Judson High School defensive tackle DeMarvin Leal. Texas traded blows with namely Texas A&M as well as Alabama in the recruitment of Leal for a good while.
But that was ultimately a moot point for the Longhorns as Leal would commit to Texas A&M and have a successful three-year collegiate career in College Station.
After having a sensational junior campaign with the Aggies where he registered more than a dozen tackles for loss and nine sacks, Leal is now projected to go as a late first-round pick or early second-round pick in this draft class.
