Jordon Thomas, EDGE/DE

The third name on this list that entered the transfer portal among Longhorns players on April 29 is also another former recruit of Herman’s staff. Former blue-chip recruit and freshman edge rusher/defensive end Jordon Thomas is the latest among the Longhorns’ defensive players to surface in the portal post-spring ball.

Thomas was looking to make some headway to earning a spot on the two-deep depth chart as he returned to the program during spring ball. But it didn’t look like Thomas was a very active participant during spring drills. The same could be said for the altered spring football game last weekend.

There are plenty of reasons why Thomas could be entering the portal, though.

First and foremost, Texas is very deep along the defensive line thanks to a good haul in the 2022 signing class. Thomas was definitely going to be facing an uphill battle to win a spot on the two-deep as a defensive end or edge rusher this fall with the rest of the incoming freshmen class along the defensive front set to soon arrive on campus.

Texas is also the apparent leader in the aforementioned race to land a commitment out of the portal from the former TCU edge rusher Mathis. Adding Mathis in the trenches this year would obviously make it even more difficult for Thomas to find a path to getting live game reps anytime soon.

All in all, it makes sense that a Herman-era recruit such as Thomas would be seeking out his next landing spot considering his 4+ years of eligibility remaining in college.
