Texas football tabbed as potential landing spot for WR Jordan Addison
The biggest news coming out of the NCAA Transfer Portal in the last few days does have a relevant connection to the coaching staff for the Texas football program. With the news coming out that the reigning Biletnikoff Award winner and the rising junior Pitt Panthers star wide receiver Jordan Addison potentially entering his name into the transfer portal this spring it looks like the transfer market is about to get really wild.
An initial report from Pete Thamel of ESPN indicates that there are some ties between Addison and the USC Trojans, despite his name seemingly not officially being entered into the transfer portal as of yet. But that could change in a matter of hours given the spring deadline coming up to cap this weekend for players to have immediate eligibility this year.
Moreover, it seems like the realistic landing spot for Addison out of the transfer portal this spring will be with new head coach Lincoln Riley and the Trojans. At least that looks to be the sentiment concerning this situation with Addison potentially entering the portal soon.
The reaction that came down surrounding this Addison transfer news and the potential ties to USC was very polarizing among the media and fans alike on social media. And that makes sense given the fact that this essentially looks like a college football free agency where the Trojans are just buying the reigning Biletnikoff Award winner from a program like Pitt that probably can’t compete in terms of NIL money.
However, since Addison isn’t officially in the portal yet, that could open the door for other potential suitors to get involved if his name does surface on the transfer market in the near future.
Texas football recently tabbed as a potential destination for Pitt WR Jordan Addison
A piece from 247Sports this weekend discussed a few potential landing spots out of the portal for Addison this spring. Texas was mentioned as one of the half-dozen or so schools in this list from 247Sports as a potential destination for Addison out of the portal.
There are some obvious ties to Texas for Addison. Namely, the new Texas wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion has clear close ties to Addison as he was his positional coach at Pitt when he had his award-winning sophomore campaign last fall.
While it is true that Texas would have quite the top duo in the receiving corps if Addison landed on the Forty Acres this offseason, it’s hard to see this playing out in the end. Texas already has a solid top trio in the receiver room between rising sophomore Xavier Worthy, redshirt junior Jordan Whittington, and redshirt sophomore Isaiah Neyor.
There are might be some suspicious eyes looking at the Longhorns if Addison were to join Marion, thus leaving Pitt high and dry this offseason.
USC is clearly making a big monetary commitment to the football program this offseason, even by the standards of a well-funded blue blood. The Trojans paid a ton of money to Riley to lure him away from the Oklahoma Sooners last fall. And they’ve already made some big moves in the transfer portal so far this offseason.
Luring Addison away from Pitt with a sizable amount of NIL money doesn’t sound like a move that would be off the table given what we’ve seen from Riley and the Trojans in the last few months.
Texas has already added three wideouts by way of the transfer portal so far this offseason, with the latest coming from a presumed preferred walk-on and former Montana senior Gabe Sulser. The other two are Neyor and the former Alabama Crimson Tide freshman Agiye Hall.
