Among the trio of Longhorns wide receivers to enter the transfer portal in the last few days is the former blue-chip recruit and redshirt sophomore Kelvontay Dixon. As one of two Texas wideouts now in the portal this week that took significant reps in the last couple of seasons, Dixon was a pretty surprising loss for Sark and his staff.

At least that seems to be the sentiment for the Longhorns following the conclusion of spring ball.

It looked like Dixon made some necessary strides during spring camp to secure his spot in the two-deep in the wide receiver room for this fall. While I wouldn’t necessarily call Dixon a lock as a starter at the X or the H spot for this coming season, he would’ve had a great shot to at least assume one of those roles with the departure of another wideout on this list.

Dixon took a career-high number of offensive snaps last season, with more than 230. He made some apparent strides in his blocking, route running, and overall versatility. Sark and his staff trusted Dixon enough to give him significant reps as a wideout lining up wide and out of the slot last season.

That led to Dixon racking up nine catches for 100 receiving yards (11.1 yards per catch) and no touchdown catches last season.

I personally anticipated Dixon to continue to progress in this receiving corps in 2022. He looked like a good fit with this receiving corps as a pretty versatile depth player in this wide receiver room. Dixon had potential in this offense, and it would be good for the depth of the Texas wide receiver room if they could somehow get him back before fall camp begins.
